Utilizing the characteristics of free flow or self-leveling of water, the flow of water in the level drives the air bubbles to move to judge the level of the plane. When the plane is horizontal, the water is evenly distributed in the instrument, and the forces acting on both ends of the air bubble are balanced, so the air bubble is evenly distributed in the middle of the instrument. When one side of the plane is higher and the other is lower, due to the characteristic of water flowing to the lower side, the water will flow to the lower end, resulting in more water at the lower end, driving the bubbles to deviate and go to the higher side. Therefore, by observing the position of the bubbles, you can tell whether the plane is level, and which side is higher and which side is lower.
